Nature of working individuals and groups

Do you react differently when you are in groups and alone? “Individuals in Groups” excerpted from book “In Groups We Shrink” Carol Tavris states people respond differently when they are in groups and individuals. In the same situation people get two different outcomes nature of groups and individuals. Psychologists call this “diffusion of responsibility” or “social loafing”. Tavris also states the groups become bigger when they joint a group and individually become lazier.  It seems true to me because people think they should come out with a result based on everybody opinion. In my experience I act differently when I’m by myself and when with someone else in a group.

last week I went to a restaurant with couple of my friends. It took us half an hour to order our food. Nobody was telling that they liked to eat. The same restaurant I use to go and it takes me a minute to give an order because I don’t have to wait on other people to know that they want to have it. As Tavris point out that people take long time to make a decision when they are in groups. When they are in groups individually think that everybody should have responsibility among of them. Therefore, individually expect that someone will response first from their group. So everybody think the same way therefore it takes time to come out a result.

In 2008 I was traveling along with couple of my friends. We saw a big crowd and we went there to see what happened. We saw a woman was laid down the street with very badly injury. Neither, I or my friend didn't come out with a result what we should do. Suddenly a man was crossing with his bike. He just stopped to see why people were gathering there. When he saw that woman, he just grab her on his arms and gone to the hospital. We just were looking at him because he didn't even hesitate to carry her to the hospital. He made quick decision because he was alone and didn't have to ask anyone what should do. That didn't mean that weren't have present of mind. We just waited to make a better decision. We were thinking because we were in groups.

In conclusion, it is nature of working differently when we are in groups and individuals as also Tavris mention. I get faster result when I work any specific objective of myself and different result at the same objective when I’m along with someone.
